SUMMARY The arterial supply and venous drainage of 62 left and 5 right ovine adrenal glands is described, and the contribution of individual arteries to successful adrenal gland autotransplantation was evaluated. Arterial flow was measured by direct collection from the draining adrenal vein. Assessment of function of the transplanted adrenal gland was made from survival of the sheep and by the cortisol response to infusion of ACTH and the aldosterone secretory response to infusion of angiotensin II or potassium. For the left adrenal, the principal arterial supply was from the renal artery in 21 (34%), a lumbar artery in 32 (52%), and the anterior mesenteric artery in 3. The total blood flow was 5.0 ± SEM 0.4 mL/min, the flow from the renal branch 2.3 ± 0.3 mL/min, and the principal lumbar branch 2.6 ± 0.3 mL/min. Venous drainage from the left adrenal was via a major adrenal vein to the left renal vein, but additional tributaries to the renal vein were present in 26% . The arterial supply to the adrenal is regional and omission of a branch at transplantation could result in infarction of portion of the gland. By defining arterial supply and measuring blood flow, selection of the appropriate artery or multiple arteries can achieve an adrenal gland autotransplant survival of 90% .  相似文献

CASE HISTORY A 21-year-old male sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) was presented following the sudden appearance of blood associated with the passage of faeces and urates.

CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: There was fresh blood-staining of the feathers around the vent. The dorsal mucosal wall of the proctodeum was erythematous and roughened in appearance. An endoscopic biopsy was performed, and histological examination revealed multiple fronds of epithelium; the mucosa varied from simple to pseudostratified columnar epithelium, with diffuse hyperplasia of goblet cells. The underlying connective tissue stroma was well vascularised and was infiltrated with mixed inflammatory cells, comprising granulocytic cells and macrophages. PCR testing for both herpesvirus and papillomavirus, using consensus primers, was negative.

DIAGNOSIS: Cloacal papillomatosis.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This case manifested typical clinical signs and histological lesions of cloacal papillomatosis in the absence of demonstrable herpesvirus or papillomavirus. Veterinarians need to consider this disease in the differential diagnosis of blood in the droppings of parrots and cockatoos even in countries where psittacine herpesviruses are exotic diseases.  相似文献

A 48-year-old, multiparous, female hybrid orang-utan ( Pongo abelii/pygmaeus ) was investigated after a 3-year history of irregular and excessively heavy menstrual bleeding. Opportunistic pelvic examinations over a 2.5-year period were non-diagnostic. Medical therapy was not effective. A subtotal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-ovariectomy was performed. A pedunculated mass spanning 90% of the uterine lumen was seen grossly, and histopathology confirmed uterine adenomyosis. Adenomyosis is defined as the ectopic occurrence or diffuse implantation of endometrial tissue, including glands and stroma, into the myometrium. It is common in older, usually premenopausal, multiparous women and is frequently associated with other uterine pathology, including endometrial hyperplasia and leiomyomas. The most common clinical signs are dysmenorrhoea and heavy menstrual bleeding; however, up to 35% of women are asymptomatic. Diagnosis is difficult and requires myometrial sampling and an experienced pathologist. A hysterectomy in this case was diagnostic and curative. There have been few reports of uterine adenomyosis in non-human primates and none reported in an orang-utan. Uterine adenomyosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis in any multiparous, aged, non-human female primate with irregular and excessively heavy menstrual bleeding, and hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-ovariectomy is recommended as a diagnostic and therapeutic solution.  相似文献

The dynamics of two-dimensional small-polaron formation at ultrathin alkane layers on a silver(111) surface have been studied with femtosecond time- and angle-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy. Optical excitation creates interfacial electrons in quasi-free states for motion parallel to the interface. These initially delocalized electrons self-trap as small polarons in a localized state within a few hundred femtoseconds. The localized electrons then decay back to the metal within picoseconds by tunneling through the adlayer potential barrier. The energy dependence of the self-trapping rate has been measured and modeled with a theory analogous to electron transfer theory. This analysis determines the inter- and intramolecular vibrational modes of the overlayer responsible for self-trapping as well as the relaxation energy of the overlayer molecular lattice. These results for a model interface contribute to the fundamental picture of electron behavior in weakly bonded solids and can lead to better understanding of carrier dynamics in many different systems, including organic light-emitting diodes.  相似文献

Summary The development and survival ofHaemonchus contortus andTrichostrongylus sp. on pasture at Bamenda, Cameroon were studied by spreading faeces containing strongyle eggs from mixed infections on 12 experimental grass plots from April 1988 to March 1989. Development of eggs to infective larvae during the rainy season (April to October) took place within one week. The infective larvae ofH. contortus survived for 11±2 weeks (with a range of 7 to 13 weeks) during this period while those ofTrichostrongylus sp. survived for 9±2 weeks (with a range of 6 to 12 weeks). No larvae were recovered from eggs spread on pasture during the dry season, except in December when unseasonal rains fell within 9 days of spread of the faeces. Rainfall was identified as the most important climatic condition affecting the development and survival of infective larvae on pastures at Bamenda.

Resumen Se estudió el desarrollo y supervivencia deHaemonchus contortus y trichostrongylus sp. en el pasto en Bamenda (Camerún) extendiendo heces contaminadas en 12 parcelas experimentales entre abril de 1988 y marzo de 1989. Durante la época húmeda, el desarrollo hasta larvas infestantes tardó una semana. Las larvas infestantes deH. contortus sobrevivieron 11±2 semanas (rango de 7 a 13 semanas), mientras que las larvas deTrichostrongylus sp. sobrevivieron durante 9±2 semanas (rango de 6 a 12 semanas). Durante la época seca no se recuperó larva, con la excepción del mes di diciembre, durante el cual se produjeron lluvias inesperadas en los 9 días siguientes a la extensión de las heces. La lluvia fue identificaada como el factor climático más importante en lo relativo al desarrollo y supervivencia de larvas infestantes en el pasto en Bamenda.

l'Etude Du Developpement Et De La Survie De Haemonchus Contortus Et De l'Espece Trichostrongylus Sur Les Paturages Au Cameroun
Résumé L'étude du dévéloppement et de la survie deHaemonchus contortus et de l'espèceTrichostrongylus sur les pâturages à Bamenda, Cameroun s'est faite par arrosage depuis le mois d'Avril 1988 à Mars 1989 de 12 partitions expérimentales de gazon avec des fécès contenant des oeufs de strongyles provenant d'une infection mixte. Le dévéloppement des oeufs jusqu'au stade larvaire infectieux pendant la saison des pluies (Avril–Octobre) s'est déroule en une semaine. La larve infectieuseH. contortus survécut pendant 11±2 semaines (dans une intervalle de sept à 13 semaines) au cours de cette période, contre 9±2 semaines pour l'espèceTrichostrongylus (avec une durée s'étalant de six à 12 semaines). Aucun dévéloppement larvaire n'a eu lieu à partir des oeufs arrosés sur les pâturages pendant la saison séche, excepté en Decembre lorsque des pluies non saisonnieres tombèrent au cours des neuf jours suivent l'arrosage des fécès. La pluviometrie parut etre le facteur climatique le plus important favorisant le dévéloppement et le survie des larves infectieuses sur les pâturages à Bamenda.

Objective To measure the plasma cortisol response in calves dehorned by four different methods (scoop, guillotine shears, saw, embryotomy wire) for 9 h after dehorning.
Design A physiological study with controls.
Procedure Horn amputation was carried out on calves restrained manually in a race.
Results The four methods of dehorning provoked similarly increased cortisol responses which lasted for 6 h. During the first hour after dehorning the plasma cortisol concentrations were similar to those following ACTH injection. The overall cortisol response to control handling was about 30% of the responses to dehorning.
Conclusions The similarity of the cortisol responses produced by the four methods of dehorning suggests that the distress experienced by calves following dehorning by amputation is similar regardless of method used.  相似文献
